Energy Resource Knowledge

Solar Fact #1:
The sun produces an estimated 4 trillion watts of electricity every single hour . . . enough power to meet our current energy needs for the next 500,000 years.
Passive Solar heating and cooling

Passive Solar designs work well with smaller
buildings, larger buildings can still find added
improvments in heating and cooling with more strategies.

By allowing direct sun light during winter months,
and the opposite during the hot season, with shading.
With added stone or tile for thermal-mass to interior
floors, and wall areas. The temperature of a building
will be more balanced and consistent to maintain.

Southern exposer with a slight southeast angle will
optimize the sun's effects, and by positioning
proper vegetation for winter sun, or summer shade.
These are all part of the passive solar design.

True passive solar heating or cooling is achieved,
through design and layout, no electric current, fuel
source, or any external energy source, other
than the sun.
There are books and reference guides that
will outline the set up and uses of Passive Solar Designs.

I have atempted to lay out these different resources,
so that the viewer will not have to endure surfing
through all the rift raft?"Plain and Simple"here it is.

Solar Fact #2:
"As prices for coal, natural gas and oil have soared, solar power has been getting perhaps its most serious look from investors since President Jimmy Carter pulled on a cardigan and asked Americans to damp their furnaces. The new interest means that the handful of domestic solar stocks has been surging, too."

- The New York Times, September 11th, 2005

E-Magazine

reviews of books, products and services; and eco-travel.
E-Magazine has drawn considerable recognition for its style and content,
and has won numerous awards for editorial excellence and for covering
issues “overlooked or under-reported by the mainstream media". Good reading

Solar Fact #3:
"Few power-generation technologies have as little impact on the environment as photovoltaics. As it quietly generates electricity from light, PV produces no air pollution or hazardous waste. It doesn't require liquid or gaseous fuels to be transported or combusted. And because its energy source - sunlight - is free and abundant, PV systems can guarantee access to electric power."

- U.S. Department of Energy

It's cheaper to save energy than to make energy.

No Cost and Low Cost Efficiency Tips

Turn water heater down to 120F (49C)

Clean refrigerator coils

Refrigerators today are designed to roll out from the wall
Pull the refrigerator out from wall and vacuum the coils on the back
and also the bottom area where the condenser is found.
If the floor area is a mess give it a quick scrub, Remove front vent cover, remove catch basin, clean, and replace.
Vacuum front area also.
The cleaner these areas are kept the more efficient a
refrigerator will run, using less energy.

Switch refrigerator to power miser setting
Use a Refrigerator-Freezer Thermometer
Set refrigerator temperature to 36-39F (2-3C)
Set freezer to 0-5 F (-18 to-15C)
Keep refrigerator/freezer full (water)

Turn off water while shaving and brushing teeth
Use cold water for wash and wash full loads
Collect rainwater
Use the right size pot/pan on the stove burner
Do not preheat your oven except for baking
Cover pots/pans when cooking
Drain some water from your water heater to remove sediment

Winter Tips

Installing a Digital Thermostat will lower heating cost.
White-Rodgers #750 Standard Programm Thermostat
A Digital Thermostat will keep the area temperature balanced,
reducing the operation time of running the Furnace.
Digital Thermostats are available for both Heating and Cooling.

Turn thermostat down 10 degrees F (5.5C) at night
Turn thermostat down 10 degrees F (5.5C) when leaving for 4 hours or more
Keep curtains open on the south side of the house during the day
Keep curtains closed on north windows
Dress in layers of clothing

Summer Tips

Close curtains on the sunny sides of home
Turn off furnace pilot light
Open windows on the cool sides of home
Wear loose, light colored clothing
Use fans to circulate air in the home

Low Cost Tips

Install low flow shower heads and aerators on faucets

Insulate Hot Water Heater
Most new homes today are built with an Insulation Blanket,
covering the Water Heater.
If the Water Heater in your Home is not covered,
check into covering with a
Water Heater Blanket Fits Up to 60 gallon Tank
Adding a Blanket to the Water Heater will Lower operating cost.

Insulate electrical outlets and switches
use Caulking on the inside of doors and windows
White Latex Caulk
Insulate/caulk all pipe penetrations in walls and ceiling

Install a bleed line on the evaporative cooler and run line to a tree
Replace furnace filter every month in winter

Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs,
Fluorescent bulbs use 1/4 of the energy, incandescent bulbs require,
and fluorescent bulbs last 5x longer.
This is a sure way to lower the monthly power bill.

Insulate the bottom and sides of waterbeds
Use a quilt or comforter on waterbeds
Purchase a water saving toilet or use toilet dams

Save Energy by using a Door Draft Dodger on doors or windows, you can make your own draft dodger to use on doors or windows.
This will work well in winter or summer for savings.

The Power-Failure Light.

The Power-Failure Light.

This device attaches between the socket and bulb of a standard table or floor lamp and automatically provides up to 8 hours of uninterrupted light from six bright LEDs as soon as power is lost, eliminating the need to search for flashlights during a blackout. Powered by built-in rechargeable batteries that automatically recharge via the lamp socket once power is restored and never require replacement, the device has an integrated photocell that detects ambient light and prevents the LEDs from turning on during the daytime or when power is restored. Compatible with incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. 5" H x 5" W x 3" D. (3 1/2 lbs.)

Self-Sufficient-life style,
With todays knowledge available, it is not like living in the old west.
We use indoor toilets, bathe regularly, have lighting at the
touch of a switch, and so much more.
But with all this knowledge, we have lost sight of the past.
Finding the freedom to live as self-sufficient as possible, but
not giving up the comforts of our everyday life.
Take the time to learn how to add these freedoms to your life.
